Trans-Atlantic partnership: our relations have to move up one gear. Joseph Daul MEP, Chairman of the EPP Group
A delegation of the EPP Group concluded this week its annual visit to the United States. The delegation had meetings in Washington DC at the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to discuss the current economic crisis, and the economic situation in the neighbourhood. The EPP Group MEPs were invited to attend the Republican National Conference in Tampa Florida as part of the international visitors programme organised by the International Republican Institute and International Democratic Union.
"These days in Tampa we have focused on the nomination of the next possible President of the United States, and what a Romney Presidency could also mean for Europe and the rest of the world.
We need to use the Euro-Atlantic partnership to change the way global governance functions. The United States and Europe can and must take a leadership role in defining the principles and structures of this new multipolar, multilateral world. We all know the difficult challenges we face today – economic insecurity, energy independence, climate change, migration, terrorism. Common action on these fronts is essential. And in addressing these issues, we need to find ways of bringing on board Russia, China, India, Brazil and the other new regional powers. We are home to the world's most successful democracies. I believe we need to use this partnership to put in place the right policies and the right institutions on a world-wide scale.
Our relationship is already very strong – we have the biggest economic flows in the world – and 95% of our trade is problem free. Our (EU and US) gross domestic product (GDP) represents more than half of the global GDP and the two partners have the world's strongest bilateral trade and investment partnership, accounting for almost 40 % of world trade.
I believe that only a strong America with a strong Europe as its partner can guarantee peace, prosperity in this century. The good will is there, now we need more joint actions. " said the Chairman of the EPP Group, Joseph Daul .
Joseph Daul led an EPP Group Delegation to the United States from 27 August -01 September 2012. The Delegation was formed by EPP Group Vice-Chairpersons Ioannis Kasoulides, Gunnar Hökmark, Marian-Jean Marinescu, Jan Olbrycht, Jozsef Szajer, Corien Wortmann-Kool, as well as the Chairman of the European Parliament's EU-US Delegation, Christian Ehler MEP.
The EPP Group MEPs had discussions with the European American Chamber of Commerce on trade and Trans-Atlantic economic relations. The Presidency met the Florida Commissioner for agriculture and discussed the US draught and its impact on world food prices. In Tampa the Presidency had a fruitful discussion with Congressman Gus Bilirakis and discussed the on-going situation in Greece as well as issues related to trade and security.
The EPP Group will be sending three observers to the US Democratic Convention in Charlotte which starts on Monday.
